Starting the Daemon

The daemon cannot be run with root, it is intended to run from your user account. To start a daemon in the background:

$ beagled

A daemon started in the background will log its progress to ~/.beagle/Log/current-Beagle.

You can also start a daemon in the foreground:

$ beagled --fg --debug

This gives you some nice debugging output.

To verify that beagled is indeed running:

 $ beagle-ping

This should output the version of the running beagled.

What now?

Now that you've got Beagle installed, you'll probably want to know how to index your data and how to search your data.

If you had trouble installing or running Beagle, try the troubleshooting page.

Stopping the Daemon

You have to type:

$ beagle-shutdown

Enabling/Disabling the Daemon

Beginning with Beagle 0.2.14, the Beagle daemon can be started automatically when you log in by using the beagle-settings tool. Simply click the "Start search & indexing services automatically" check box, and the next time you log in the Beagle daemon will start automatically. Uncheck it if you don't want the daemon to start on your next login.
