I didn't need to emerge all this manually. The "emerge -va beagle" took care of this. I suppose I'd rewrite this page if I find the time to.

When starting beagled as root with --fg --debug, it tells me "You can not run beagle as root. Beagle is designed to run from your own user account. If you want to create multiuser or system-wide indexes, use the beagle-build-index tool."
